Nemtek 1.2mm stainless steel braided electric fence wire on an 800m roll, made from AISI 304 stainless steel. Nemtek calls it stranded wire: several fine 304 strands twisted into one 1.2mm wire. It is the Nemtek wire for most corrosive environments and for properties near the coast, from about 50km inland, and Nemtek rates it at a 110kg breaking strength with a 22kg safe working load. Its high tensile strength makes it harder to cut. On the coast itself, Nemtek specifies 316 stainless instead.

Which fence wire do you need?

Stainless steel is the corrosion choice, not the conductivity choice. At 700 ohm/km it has the highest resistance of the Nemtek wires we list: four times the 1.2mm galvanised wire at 175 ohm/km and far above the 1.6mm aluminium wire at 27 to 31 ohm/km. Inland, where corrosion is low, galvanised or aluminium does the job. Choose 304 stainless where rust would shorten the life of a steel wire: corrosive environments and sites near the coast. Right on the coast Nemtek moves to 316 stainless; ask the branch about the 316 version.

Joining and tensioning stainless wire

Nemtek specifies 6mm 304 stainless steel ferrules (EA-F6S/SS) for crimped joins on 1.0 and 1.2mm stainless wire; we do not list them online, so ask the branch. The Nemtek 6mm bolt-type line clamp suits wire up to 1.6mm and gives a join you can undo; Nemtek also makes a stainless version of the clamp. For tension use the gold 8kg Hybrid Compression Spring 2, which Nemtek rates for 1.2mm stainless wire, or the silver 5kg Compression Spring 1 for wire up to 1.2mm. Both have a plastic inner that stops galvanic reaction between spring and wire. A large tail spring hook links the spring to the insulator.

Energizer, lead-out and fence light

Run the fence from a Nemtek Merlin Stealth M18S, Merlin Stealth M28S or Wizord 4i energizer. Nemtek pairs stainless wire with its SS-Series stainless steel HT cable, which we do not list online; our listed Nemtek HT cable is the tinned copper S-Series slimline in 30m, 50m and 100m. For a fence light, Nemtek's blue Timed Fence Light is the version made for stainless steel wire. The fence must be installed and certified by a registered electric fence installer. Alectra supplies the equipment only.

Key features
  • AISI 304 stainless steel. Nemtek's wire for most corrosive environments and for sites near the coast, from about 50km inland.
  • 110kg breaking strength. With a 22kg safe working load, Nemtek's published figures for this wire.
  • Harder to cut. Nemtek describes the wire as high in tensile strength, which makes it harder to cut.
  • Stranded (braided) construction. Several fine 304 strands twisted into one 1.2mm wire, the construction Nemtek describes as easy to work with.
  • 700 ohm/km. The highest resistance of the Nemtek wires we list, so it is chosen for corrosion resistance and strength, not conductivity.
  • Matched Nemtek fittings. 6mm 304 stainless ferrules, the 6mm bolt-type line clamp, the gold 8kg or silver 5kg spring, and Nemtek's SS-Series HT cable for the lead-out.
  • Blue fence light to match. Nemtek's blue Timed Fence Light is the version made for stainless steel wire.

Questions people ask
Is 304 stainless the right wire for the coast?

Nemtek rates 304 for most corrosive environments and for sites near the coast, from about 50km inland. On the coast itself Nemtek specifies 316 stainless steel wire; ask the branch about the 316 version.

Why does stainless steel braided electric fence wire have such high resistance?

Stainless steel conducts far less well than aluminium: Nemtek quotes 700 ohm/km for this wire against 27 to 31 ohm/km for its 1.6mm aluminium. You choose it for corrosion resistance and strength, so it suits sites where corrosion, not fence length, is the problem.

Braided or stranded?

The same thing here. Shoppers say braided; Nemtek says stranded, meaning several fine 304 strands twisted into one 1.2mm wire.

How strong is it?

Nemtek rates the breaking strength at 110kg and the safe working load at 22kg, and describes the wire as high in tensile strength, which is what makes it harder to cut.

Which ferrules and clamp do I use?

Nemtek specifies 6mm 304 stainless steel ferrules for 1.0 and 1.2mm stainless wire; we do not list them online, so ask the branch. The 6mm bolt-type line clamp suits wire up to 1.6mm, and Nemtek also makes it in stainless.

Which spring tensions 1.2mm stainless wire?

Nemtek rates the gold 8kg Hybrid Compression Spring 2 for 1.2mm stainless wire, and the silver 5kg Compression Spring 1 for any fence wire up to 1.2mm. Both have a plastic inner that stops galvanic reaction.

Does the fence light matter?

Nemtek makes its Timed Fence Light in two versions: blue for stainless steel wire and grey for galvanised and aluminium. Use the blue one on this wire.

Do I need an installer?

Yes. An electric fence must be installed and certified by a registered electric fence installer, who also issues the compliance certificate. Alectra supplies the wire, cable and fittings only.

Need it fitted? Alectra Solutions supplies product only. Ask the branch and we will point you to installers in Pretoria.
