Nemtek 1.2mm galvanised electric fence wire on a 680m roll, stranded from several fine steel strands so it stays easy to work with on the brackets. Nemtek rates it at 175 ohm/km with 10 to 11% elongation, and describes it as high in tensile strength, which makes it harder to cut than aluminium wire. It is the wire Nemtek recommends for inland fences where corrosion is low, which covers most Pretoria and Gauteng properties. Shoppers often call it braided wire; Nemtek's own word for it is stranded.
What you get
One 680m roll of 1.2mm stranded galvanised steel wire, Nemtek code EW-T12/BB. Nemtek does not publish a roll weight for this wire, so we sell it by length rather than by kilogram.
Which fence wire do you need?
Galvanised steel is the hard-to-cut choice for inland fences, but at 175 ohm/km it carries the pulse less well than aluminium. For a long perimeter, or where you want the least voltage lost along the run, look at the Nemtek 1.6mm stranded aluminium wire (1000m) or its 500m roll, which Nemtek quotes at 27 to 31 ohm/km. For corrosive environments, or properties nearer the coast (Nemtek says from about 50km inland), Nemtek points to its 1.2mm 304 stainless steel wire.
Joining and tensioning 1.2mm galvanised wire
Nemtek matches this wire with 6mm tinned copper ferrules (EA-F6S) for permanent crimped joins; we do not list them online, so ask the branch. For a join you can undo, use the Nemtek 6mm bolt-type line clamp, also sold as a 50 pack, which suits wire up to 1.6mm. To keep the strands tight, fit the silver 5kg Compression Spring 1, which Nemtek rates for wire up to 1.2mm, or the gold 8kg Hybrid Compression Spring 2 with its built-in ratchet. Link the spring to the bobbin with a large tail spring hook.
Energizer and lead-out
The fence wire is the live conductor on the brackets. The energizer feeds it through insulated HT cable: use Nemtek slimline HT cable for the lead-out and the earth connection, and join cable to wire with a line clamp. Run the fence from a Nemtek Merlin Stealth M18S, Merlin Stealth M28S or Wizord 4i energizer. The fence must be installed and certified by a registered electric fence installer. Alectra supplies the equipment only.
Key features
- Harder to cut. Nemtek describes the galvanised strand as high in tensile strength, so it is harder to cut than aluminium fence wire.
- Stranded for easy handling. Several fine galvanised strands twisted into one 1.2mm wire. Nemtek describes its stranded wires as easy to work with.
- Made for inland fences. Nemtek's ideal choice for inland use where corrosion is low, which suits most Gauteng properties.
- 175 ohm/km. Higher resistance than Nemtek's aluminium wires at 27 to 31 ohm/km, and far lower than 304 stainless steel at 700 ohm/km.
- 10 to 11% elongation. Nemtek's published elongation figure for this wire.
- Matched Nemtek fittings. Pairs with 6mm tinned copper ferrules, the 6mm bolt-type line clamp and the silver 5kg or gold 8kg compression spring.
- Full 680m roll. One roll, Nemtek code EW-T12/BB. Nemtek does not publish a roll weight.

Questions people ask
Nemtek does not publish a roll weight for this wire, so we sell it by length: a full 680m roll.
For most inland properties, yes. Nemtek calls galvanised its ideal choice for inland use where corrosion is low. In corrosive environments or nearer the coast, Nemtek recommends stainless steel wire instead.
Nothing on this roll. Shoppers say braided, Nemtek says stranded: several fine galvanised steel strands twisted into one 1.2mm wire.
Galvanised steel is harder to cut, but at 175 ohm/km it has far higher resistance than Nemtek's 1.6mm aluminium at 27 to 31 ohm/km. On a long fence the aluminium loses less voltage along the run.
Nemtek rates the silver 5kg Compression Spring 1 for wire up to 1.2mm, so it fits. The gold 8kg Hybrid Compression Spring 2 also takes 1.2mm galvanised wire and adds a ratchet for tensioning.
Nemtek specifies 6mm tinned copper ferrules for 1.2mm galvanised wire and keeps the aluminium ferrules for 1.6mm aluminium wire. If you prefer a join you can undo, use the 6mm bolt-type line clamp, which suits wire up to 1.6mm.
Divide 680m by the number of lines. A 6 line fence uses 6m of wire for every metre of wall, so one roll covers roughly 113m of wall before you allow for tails, joins and springs; on 8 lines it is roughly 85m.
Yes. An electric fence must be installed and certified by a registered electric fence installer, who also issues the compliance certificate. Alectra supplies the wire, cable and fittings only.
