The full 1000m roll of Nemtek 1.6mm stranded aluminium electric fence wire, the roll to buy for a long perimeter or a fence of six to eight lines. Many shoppers search for Nemtek braided wire; Nemtek's word for it is stranded, meaning several aluminium alloy strands twisted into one 1.6mm wire. Low resistance (Nemtek quotes 27 to 31 ohm/km) keeps the voltage up along a long fence, the alloy gives good corrosion resistance 5km or more from the coast, and Nemtek describes its stranded wires as easy to work with. Need less? The same wire comes as a 500m half roll.
1000m or 500m?
One 1000m roll is the simpler buy for a new fence: fewer roll ends to join, and spare wire left for tails and later repairs. If the job is a short boundary, one extra line or a repair, the 500m roll is the same wire in half the length.
Which fence wire do you need?
Of the Nemtek fence wires we list, aluminium has the lowest resistance: 27 to 31 ohm/km, against 175 ohm/km for the 1.2mm galvanised wire and 700 ohm/km for the 1.2mm 304 stainless steel wire, so less voltage is lost over a long run. Galvanised is the harder-to-cut steel wire for inland sites where corrosion is low; stainless is for corrosive environments and sites nearer the coast. Nemtek also makes this alloy as a 1.6mm solid aluminium wire, one strand instead of several, rated at 27 ohm/km with a 60 to 70kg breaking strength.
Joining and tensioning the wire
For permanent joins Nemtek specifies its 6mm aluminium ferrules, made for 1.6mm aluminium wire. The 6mm bolt-type line clamp (also as a 50 pack) suits wire up to 1.6mm and can be undone. Nemtek rates the gold 8kg Hybrid Compression Spring 2 for tensioning 1.6mm aluminium; the silver 5kg Compression Spring 1 is for wire up to 1.2mm. A large tail spring hook links the spring to a flat or round bar insulator.
Energizer and lead-out
Any of the Nemtek energizers we list will run it: the Merlin Stealth M18S (single zone), the Merlin Stealth M28S (dual zone) or the Wizord 4i. For the lead-out and earth, Nemtek names its A-Series aluminium HT cable as the ideal cable when aluminium wire is used; our listed Nemtek single core HT cable comes in 30m, 50m and 100m. The fence must be installed and certified by a registered electric fence installer. Alectra supplies the equipment only.
Key features
- The full roll. 1000m for long perimeters and multi-line fences, with fewer roll ends to join than two half rolls.
- Low resistance. Nemtek quotes 27 to 31 ohm/km, far below galvanised steel at 175 ohm/km, so less voltage is lost along a long fence.
- Aluminium alloy. Good corrosion resistance for most environments 5km or more from the coastline, in Nemtek's words.
- Stranded and easy to work with. Several alloy strands twisted into one 1.6mm wire, the construction Nemtek describes as easy to work with.
- 10 to 11% elongation. Nemtek's published elongation figure for this wire.
- Tension with the gold 8kg spring. Nemtek rates the Hybrid Compression Spring 2 for 1.6mm aluminium; the silver 5kg spring is for wire up to 1.2mm.
- Crimps with 6mm aluminium ferrules. Nemtek's 6mm aluminium ferrules are the ferrule for 1.6mm aluminium wire. The 6mm bolt-type line clamp also fits.

Questions people ask
Divide by the number of lines. A 6 line fence uses 6m of wire per metre of wall, so 1000m covers roughly 166m of wall before tails, joins and springs; on 8 lines it is roughly 125m.
Yes. Braided is the word shoppers use; Nemtek calls it 1.6mm stranded aluminium wire, code EW-AL16S, and this is the full 1000m roll.
Nemtek's product page says 27 ohm/km and its fence wire data sheet says 31 ohm/km. We show both rather than pick one.
Nemtek specifies the gold 8kg Hybrid Compression Spring 2 for 1.6mm aluminium wire and its 6mm aluminium ferrules for crimped joins. The 6mm bolt-type line clamp also suits wire up to 1.6mm.
Nemtek gives the alloy good corrosion resistance for most environments 5km or more from the coastline. Nearer the sea, Nemtek recommends stainless steel wire.
Both are 1.6mm Nemtek aluminium alloy and use the same ferrules, clamp and gold spring. The solid wire is one strand, rated 27 ohm/km with a 60 to 70kg breaking strength; Nemtek describes the stranded wire as easy to work with.
Yes. An electric fence must be installed and certified by a registered electric fence installer, who also issues the compliance certificate. Alectra supplies the wire, cable and fittings only.
