The Nemtek Hybrid Compression Spring 1 is an electric fence spring tensioner that puts a compression spring and a ratchet tensioner in one small black unit. Nemtek fits it with its standard 5kg silver spring in stainless steel, and you tighten it with a 1/4 inch ratchet, so the strand is pulled up tight when the fence is built and can be re-tensioned years later without undoing anything. This page sells one unit, for a repair or a single line. For a whole fence, see the 50 pack.
Spring and ratchet in one
On a plain compression spring you set the tension when you fit it. On the Hybrid, the wire winds onto a glass filled nylon spindle with a ratchet. Put a 1/4 inch ratchet on the spindle, wind the strand tight and the ratchet holds it. The stainless steel spring then does what Nemtek says it does: it maintains constant tension on the fence as the wire expands and contracts. When the strand needs taking up, a few clicks of the ratchet do it.
What silver 5kg means
Nemtek colour codes its springs by tension class. Silver is the standard 5kg spring; gold is the medium 8kg spring used on the Hybrid Compression Spring 2. The body is black on both. Nemtek lists the Hybrid 1 for use with any type of electric fence wire, and the silver 5kg spring is the one Alectra supplies in its 6 line and 8 line electric fence kits.
Made for a live fence
The spring is stainless steel. The inner is UV stabilised plastic, which Nemtek says eliminates galvanic reaction between dissimilar metals, reduces rust and extends the life of the wire. The spindle is glass filled nylon. Nemtek rates the unit from -40°C to +80°C and from 0 to 12kV, and it weighs 22g.
Which Nemtek spring do you need?
The Compression Spring 1 is the same 5kg silver spring without the ratchet, which Nemtek's manual says you preload with a nail. The Hybrid 1 on this page adds the ratchet. The Hybrid Compression Spring 2 is the gold 8kg spring with a ratchet, for more pull on the strand. Nemtek's large tail spring hook gives a quick connection between any of these tensioners and a flat or round bar insulator.
Pairs well with
Nemtek 1.6mm aluminium wire with 6mm aluminium ferrules, 1.2mm galvanised wire with line clamps, our 6 line square tube brackets, and a Nemtek Merlin Stealth M18S energizer.
Key features
- Spring and ratchet in one. No separate tensioner: the compression spring holds the tension and the ratchet lets you take up slack.
- Standard 5kg silver spring. Nemtek's standard tension class. Silver is the spring colour code; the body itself is black.
- Stainless steel spring. Nemtek says the stainless steel spring maintains constant tension on the fence.
- Re-tension with a 1/4 inch ratchet. Fit a 1/4 inch ratchet on the spindle and wind the strand tight, on the day or years later.
- Nylon inner stops galvanic reaction. The UV stabilised plastic inner keeps dissimilar metals apart, which Nemtek says reduces rust and extends the life of the wire.
- Glass filled nylon spindle. The ratchet spindle the wire winds onto is moulded in glass filled nylon.
- Any type of fence wire. Nemtek lists it for use with any type of electric fence wire.
- Rated -40°C to +80°C and 0 to 12kV. Made for the temperatures and voltages a live fence line sees.
- Sold singly. One unit for a repair or a single line. The same unit comes in a 50 pack for new fences.

Questions people ask
It combines two parts that are normally separate: a compression spring, which keeps the strand tight as the wire expands and contracts, and a ratchet tensioner, which lets you wind the wire tight and take up slack later.
Silver is Nemtek's colour code for its standard 5kg spring. Gold is the medium 8kg spring on the Hybrid Compression Spring 2. The body of the unit is black on both; silver refers to the spring inside.
A 1/4 inch ratchet, which is not included. Fit it on the spindle and wind until the strand is tight.
Nemtek lists it for use with any type of electric fence wire. It is the same silver 5kg spring Alectra supplies in its 6 line and 8 line fence kits with 1.6mm aluminium wire. If you want more pull on the strand, Nemtek's gold 8kg Hybrid Compression Spring 2 is the next step up.
Both use the standard 5kg silver spring. The Compression Spring 1 has no ratchet, so you preload it when you fit it. The Hybrid 1 adds a ratchet spindle so you can tension and re-tension the strand with a 1/4 inch ratchet.
No. Nemtek's large tail spring hook, sold in a 50 pack, gives a quick connection between a Nemtek tensioner and a flat or round bar insulator.
This page sells one Hybrid Compression Spring 1. The 50 pack is an Alectra pack of 50 of the same unit for new fences and installers who keep stock.
No. Alectra supplies the equipment only. An electric fence must be installed and certified by a registered electric fence installer, who issues the compliance certificate.
