This is 305m of grey CAT6 UTP network cable on a reel, with CCA (copper clad aluminium) cores. If you are comparing CAT6 cable 305m rolls, know that this one is not pure copper: each core is aluminium with a copper coating, which is what makes it cheaper than solid copper cable. It is a budget cable for indoor network and data runs that stay well short of 100m, and for sending analogue HD CCTV video over twisted pair with passive video baluns. Read the notes below on run length and PoE before you buy it for IP cameras.

What CCA means

CCA stands for copper clad aluminium: an aluminium core with a copper outer layer. It costs less than pure copper, but it has a higher resistance and the cores are more brittle, so avoid tight bends and hard pulls and take care when you terminate it. The standards for category cable call for copper conductors, so we do not claim this cable meets the CAT6 standard. Here CAT6 describes the type of cable, not a certification.

Run length and PoE

Ethernet allows a maximum of 100m per link, whatever the cable. With CCA, cable makers warn that the higher resistance can take runs of about 65m and longer past the resistance limit, so keep runs short. They also say CCA is not suitable for PoE, because the cores heat up under load. For PoE IP cameras, use pure copper cable.

Using it for CCTV

With a pair of passive video baluns on each run, this cable carries video from TVI, CVI, AHD or analogue cameras, such as the HiLook 2MP bullet, to a DVR like the HiLook 4 channel Turbo HD DVR. The baluns are rated up to 200m at 1080p and 300m at 720p depending on cable, and CCA's higher resistance shortens that, so leave a good margin. The baluns do not carry power, so the camera still needs 12V run separately. For video and power in one cable, use RG59 cable with power instead.

What else you need

The cable comes on a reel with no connectors fitted: cut it to length and fit RJ45 plugs or keystone jacks, which are sold separately, with the right crimp or punch-down tool. If you only need 10m, see our 10m CAT6 network cable. The system is installed by your installer; Alectra supplies the equipment only.

Key features
  • 305m on a reel. Enough for many network points or CCTV runs from one reel.
  • CCA cores. Aluminium with a copper coating: cheaper than pure copper, but not the same thing.
  • UTP construction. Unshielded twisted pair; the twisting of each pair cuts crosstalk between them.
  • For short indoor runs. Ethernet links max out at 100m, and CCA is best kept well under that.
  • Works with video baluns. Carries TVI, CVI, AHD and analogue CCTV video with a balun pair on each run.
  • Cut to length. No connectors fitted, so you terminate each run to the length you need.
  • Grey jacket. A neutral colour for runs along walls and ceilings.

Questions people ask
Is this CAT6 cable 305m roll pure copper?

No. The cores are CCA, copper clad aluminium: aluminium with a copper coating. If you need pure copper, this is not the cable.

Can I use it for PoE cameras?

We do not recommend it. Cable makers say CCA is not suitable for PoE, because the aluminium cores have a higher resistance and heat up under load. Use pure copper cable for PoE.

How long can a single run be?

Ethernet allows 100m per link with any cable. With CCA, keep runs well under that: cable makers warn that runs from about 65m can go past the resistance limit.

Does it meet the CAT6 standard?

We do not claim it does. The standards for category cable call for copper conductors, and these cores are copper clad aluminium.

Can I use it for CCTV?

Yes, for analogue HD cameras with a pair of passive video baluns on each run. The baluns carry video only, so the camera still needs its own 12V supply.

Can I run it outside?

No UV or outdoor rating is stated for the jacket, so run it indoors, or inside conduit where it goes outside.
