This is a 100m roll of RG59 cable with power: 75 ohm RG59 coax for the video with a built-in power pair, so one cable carries the picture and the 12V supply between the DVR end and each camera. It is the cable for analogue HD CCTV, meaning TVI, CVI and AHD cameras such as the HiLook 2MP Turbo HD bullet, and older analogue cameras. It is not for IP cameras, which use network cable. Each run needs a BNC crimp connector at both ends of the coax and a screw terminal DC plug on the power pair at the camera.

How many cameras will 100m do?

Measure each run from the DVR and power supply to the camera, add a little spare at both ends, and add the runs up. Four cameras at about 25m each use one 100m roll. Our HiLook 4 channel and 8 channel CCTV kits each come with a 100m roll of RG59 cable with power, and the 16 channel kit with two.

Terminating RG59 cable with power

The coax gets a BNC connector at each end: one pack of two BNC crimp connectors does one camera run, and needs a coax crimping tool. The screw type BNC connector is the option that needs only a small screwdriver. At the camera, the power pair goes into a screw terminal DC plug, marked + and -, which plugs into the camera's power socket. At the other end, the pair wires into an output of a Hikvision CCTV power supply or a 9 channel power supply box. Use the same core for positive at both ends.

Long runs and voltage drop

The 12V on the power pair drops along a long run, so the camera at the far end gets less than the supply puts out. On a long run, measure the voltage at the camera. The Hikvision power supplies have Long (13.5V) and Ex-Long (15V) settings to make up for it; keep the voltage at the camera inside its rating.

Coax or CAT6 with baluns?

RG59 with power is the simple choice: video and power in one cable, with no baluns needed. If network cable is already in the wall, a pair of passive video baluns sends the video over CAT5e or CAT6 instead, but the camera's power then needs its own run. The system is installed by your installer; Alectra supplies the equipment only.

Questions people ask
Can I use RG59 cable with power for IP cameras?

No. IP cameras use network cable. RG59 with power is for TVI, CVI, AHD and analogue cameras.

How many cameras can I wire with a 100m roll?

Add up your runs. Four cameras at about 25m each use one roll; for 16 cameras, our 16 channel kit uses two.

Which connectors do I need per camera?

Two BNC connectors, one at each end of the coax, and one DC plug on the power pair at the camera. One pack of BNC crimp connectors does one run.

Will it work with HiLook and Hikvision Turbo HD cameras?

Yes. Turbo HD cameras send their video over coax with a BNC connection, and RG59 is the 75 ohm coax for it.

How far can I run it?

On long runs the 12V on the power pair drops before it reaches the camera. Measure at the camera, and use the Long or Ex-Long setting on a Hikvision CCTV power supply if the voltage is low.

Which way round does the power pair go?

Pick one core for positive and use it for positive at both ends. The DC plug's screw terminals are marked + and -.

Do I need a crimping tool?

For the crimp BNC connectors, yes, a coax crimping tool. The screw type BNC connector needs only a small screwdriver.
