The colours are our supplier's code, not an industry standard, and other suppliers use different colours for the same weight. The 45kg and 100kg are both green, so order by the kg figure, not the colour alone. The stripe runs along the coils, which also helps the installer count turns while winding.
Choosing garage door springs: weight and wind
The simplest way to get it right is like for like: the same kg and the same wind as the spring coming off your door. Some doors run one spring and some run two. On a two-spring door, replace both at the same time; a door with one spring only needs one. If the old spring is missing or the stripe has worn off, ask your installer to work out what the door needs before you order.
Left-wound or right-wound?
Torsion springs come wound in one of two directions, and the two are not interchangeable. Choose Left or Right in the variant picker to match the spring you are replacing. If you cannot tell which way your old spring is wound, ask your garage door installer to check before you order.
Safety: leave spring work to an installer
A torsion spring stores a lot of energy, and the cables, drums and brackets it works with are under high tension too. Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the parts only. A spring change is also a good time to look at the lifting cables, the cable drums and the centre bearing plate the springs anchor to.
