This is the 90kg torsion spring with the orange stripe, the second heaviest of our garage door springs. Go one step down for the 80kg (yellow) or up for the 100kg (green), or compare every weight on one page. Each order line is one spring for a sectional garage door, left-wound or right-wound. At this weight you are usually looking at a heavy double or caravan-height door.

Heavier garage door springs: 90kg or 100kg?

In South Africa, 90kg and 100kg springs are used on heavy double doors and caravan-height doors. The 90kg is the lighter of the two. If your door is lighter than that, the 80kg is a step down. These are not springs for industrial doors, which use springs of 150kg and more. Match your old spring's kg and wind, or let your installer confirm the weight.

The orange stripe

Orange is our supplier's code for the 90kg spring. Other suppliers use their own colours, so order by the kg rating. Along the coils, the stripe also gives the installer a line for counting turns while winding.

Left-wound or right-wound?

Torsion springs come wound in one of two directions, and the two are not interchangeable. Choose Left or Right in the variant picker to match the spring you are replacing. If you cannot tell which way your old spring is wound, ask your garage door installer to check before you order.

Fitting and the parts around it

This is not a DIY job. The spring, cables, drums and brackets are all under high tension, and spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the parts only. The spring anchors to the centre bearing plate, and the shaft it turns carries the cable drums that wind the lifting cables.

Questions people ask
Is the 90kg spring sold singly?

Yes. Each order line is one 90kg spring, left-wound or right-wound. If your door has two springs, order two, each with the same wind as the spring it replaces.

Do I need Left or Right?

Order the same wind as the spring you are replacing. Left-wound and right-wound springs turn in opposite directions and cannot be swapped. If you cannot tell, ask your garage door installer to check before you order.

Is the 90kg suitable for a caravan garage door?

In South Africa, 90kg and 100kg springs are used on heavy double doors and caravan-height doors. Match the kg and wind of the old spring to be sure.

Does it work on a roll-up door?

No. Our torsion springs are for sectional garage doors only.

Can I use a 90kg spring on an industrial door?

No. Industrial doors use springs of 150kg and up.

Can I fit the spring myself?

We do not recommend it. Torsion springs are under high tension, and spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the parts only.
