This is the 65kg tension spring, also called an extension spring, marked with a red end loop. It is one of two garage door springs we sell for tension-spring doors: the other is the 70kg with the brown end loop. Each spring is sold singly and a door needs two, each rated for the full door weight, so a 65kg door takes two 65kg springs. These springs suit single sectional doors. If your springs sit on a shaft above the door opening, you need a torsion spring instead.

How tension garage door springs work

Tension springs run along the top of the door, beside the horizontal tracks on each side. They stretch when the door closes, storing energy, and give it back to help lift the door when it opens. On the door, each spring works with a spring mount pulley, a track mount pulley and a lifting cable.

Two springs per door

A tension-spring door uses two springs, one on each side, and each spring is rated for the weight of the whole door. That means a 65kg door needs two 65kg springs, not two smaller springs that add up to 65kg. Replace both springs at the same time, even if only one has broken, so the door stays balanced.

Which doors it suits, and the red loop

In South Africa, tension springs are mostly used on single sectional doors. Double doors only use them when the door is light, up to about 60kg, so the 65kg is a single-door spring. The red end loop is our supplier's mark for the 65kg, not an industry colour standard, and other suppliers mark a 65kg spring differently.

Safety cable and fitting

Run a safety cable through each tension spring, so that if a spring breaks the cable keeps it from flying loose. The safety cable is not included. Springs, cables and pulleys are under high tension, so spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the parts only.

Questions people ask
Do I need one tension spring or two?

Two. A tension-spring door has one spring on each side. The springs are sold singly, so add two to your order.

My door weighs 65kg. Do I need two 65kg springs or two smaller ones?

Two 65kg springs. Each spring is rated for the full weight of the door, not half of it.

Can I use this spring on a double garage door?

Tension springs are mostly used on single sectional doors. Double doors only use them when the door is light, up to about 60kg, so the 65kg is a single-door spring. Ask your installer if you are not sure.

What does the red end loop mean?

It is our supplier's mark for the 65kg spring. It is not an industry standard, and other suppliers use other colours for the same weight, so order by the kg rating.

Only one spring broke. Should I replace both?

Yes. Replace tension springs in pairs so the door stays balanced.

Is a safety cable included?

No. Run a safety cable through each spring. If a spring breaks, the cable keeps it from flying loose.

Can I fit a tension spring myself?

Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer, because the parts are under high tension. Alectra Solutions supplies the parts only.

Need it fitted? Alectra Solutions supplies product only. Ask the branch and we will point you to installers in Pretoria.
