This is the 70kg tension spring, also called an extension spring, with a brown end loop. It is the heavier of the two garage door springs we sell for tension-spring doors; the lighter one is the 65kg with the red end loop. The spring is sold singly and a door needs two, each rated for the full door weight, so a 70kg door takes two 70kg springs. It suits single sectional doors. Two garage door springs, each rated for the whole door
This is the part people most often get wrong. The two springs on a tension-spring door do not split the weight half each; each one is rated for the full door. A 70kg door therefore takes two 70kg springs, one on each side. When one spring breaks, replace both together so the door stays balanced. Each spring hooks to a spring mount pulley that carries the lifting cable.
Single doors only
Tension springs run along the top of the door beside the horizontal tracks, stretching as the door closes and helping to lift it as it opens. In South Africa they are used mainly on single sectional doors. Double doors only use them when the door is light, up to about 60kg, so a 70kg tension spring is a single-door part.
The brown end loop
Brown is our supplier's mark for the 70kg spring. It is not an industry colour standard: other colour charts put brown on a slightly different weight, so a brown spring from another supplier is not necessarily 70kg. Order by the kg rating, not the colour.
Safety cables and fitting
Run a safety cable through each tension spring. If a spring snaps, the cable stops it from flying loose across the garage. Safety cables are not included. The springs, cables and pulleys are under high tension, so spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the parts only.
