These garage door cables are for doors with tension springs, also called extension springs. Each galvanised steel cable runs from the bottom bracket of the door, over the track mount pulley and then the spring mount pulley. If your door has a torsion spring on a shaft, where the cable winds onto a cable drum, you need the lifting cables for torsion spring doors instead. Replace the cables on both sides together.

Tension or torsion: which garage door cables do you need?

A torsion door has a spring on a shaft above the door, with a cable drum at each end that the cable winds onto. A tension door has springs that stretch as the door closes, with pulleys that guide the cable. These cables are for the tension door. The torsion cables lock into the drum and are a different listing.

How the cable runs

From the bottom bracket, the cable goes up to the track mount pulley, which turns it towards the spring, and then over the spring mount pulley that hooks onto the end of the tension spring. The springs, such as the 65kg tension spring (red end loop) and the 70kg tension spring (brown end loop), are sold separately.

Replace both sides together

The cables on the two sides of the door work together to keep it balanced. If one is frayed or broken, change both. Cable length depends on the height of the door, so tell us the height of your opening, or send a photo of the old cables, and we will help you match them.

Leave cable work to an installer

The lifting cables carry the full pull of the springs. Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between tension and torsion garage door cables?

Tension cables run over pulleys on doors with tension (extension) springs. Torsion cables have an end that locks into a cable drum on the torsion shaft. They are made for different doors, so check which springs your door has.

Should I replace both garage door cables at the same time?

Yes. Replace both sides together so the door stays balanced.

Can I replace the cables myself?

The cables carry the pull of the springs, so spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.

Which pulleys do the cables run over?

The track mount pulley with bolt and nut, which turns the cable towards the spring, and the spring mount pulley that hooks onto the end of the tension spring.

What length cable do I need?

That depends on the height of your door. Tell us the height of the opening, or send a photo of your old cables, and we will help you match them.

Are the cables galvanised?

Yes, they are galvanised steel cable.
