These garage door cables are for doors with a torsion spring on a shaft, where each cable winds onto a cable drum. The galvanised cable has a loop end that goes over the pin on the bottom bracket, and the other end locks into the left or right cable drum. For a door with tension (extension) springs and pulleys, you need the lifting cables for tension spring doors instead. Replace the cables on both sides together.
How torsion lifting cables work
At the bottom, the loop end sits on the pin of the left or right bottom bracket. At the top, the other end locks into the cable drum on the torsion shaft. As the shaft turns, the drum winds the cable on and off, and the torsion spring on the shaft does the lifting.
Torsion or tension cables?
Look above the door. If there is a spring on a shaft with a drum at each end, you have a torsion door and these are the cables to use. If the door has tension springs with pulleys, the cable runs over the pulleys instead of a drum, and you need the tension cables.
Replace both sides together
The two cables lift the door as a pair, one on each drum. If one is frayed or broken, replace both. Cable length depends on the height of the door, and the cable must suit your drums, so tell us your door height and send a photo of the drums and old cables before you order.
Leave cable work to an installer
A torsion spring stores a lot of force, and the cables and bottom brackets hold it. Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.
