This is the right cable drum for a torsion spring garage door, sold singly. Right means the right-hand side when you stand inside the garage looking at the door. It is fitted on the torsion shaft and winds the right-hand lifting cable as the shaft turns, while its partner, the left cable drum, does the same on the other side, so both garage door cables wind together. A door needs one of each, and you can order just the side you need.

Right or left: check from inside the garage

Face the closed door from inside the garage. The drum on your right-hand side is this one; the drum on your left is the left drum. At the same end of the shaft, the right end bearing plate holds the shaft above the vertical track.

What the cable drum does

When the door opens, the torsion springs turn the shaft and the drum winds the lifting cable into its grooves. When the door closes, the cable unwinds again. The loop end of the cable sits on the bottom bracket pin and the other end locks into the drum, while set screws in the hub hold the drum on the shaft. Pair it with the lifting cables for torsion spring doors.

Matching the drum to your door

Drum size follows door height. Locally, drums are usually sold as "8" for standard-height doors and "12" for caravan-height doors. The new drum should match the left drum on your door; if you are unsure of the size, ask Alectra Solutions before ordering.

Leave drum and cable work to an installer

The drums and cables hold the door against the pull of the torsion springs, so everything on the shaft is under high tension. Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.

Questions people ask
Is right as seen from inside or outside the garage?

From inside the garage, facing the door. The drum on your right-hand side is the right drum.

Must cable drums be replaced in pairs?

No. They are sold singly by side, so you can replace only the right drum. Make sure its size matches the left drum on your door.

Which lifting cables fit this garage door cable drum?

Lifting cables for torsion spring doors: the loop end goes on the bottom bracket pin and the other end locks into the drum.

How do I know which drum size my door needs?

Drum size follows door height. Locally, drums are usually sold as "8" for standard-height doors and "12" for caravan-height doors. Ask Alectra Solutions to confirm the size before you order.

Is this drum for torsion or tension spring doors?

Torsion spring doors only. Tension spring doors work with pulleys and their own lifting cables, not drums.

Can I fit the drum myself?

Everything on the torsion shaft is under high tension. Drum, spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.

Need it fitted? Alectra Solutions supplies product only. Ask the branch and we will point you to installers in Pretoria.
