This is the left cable drum for a torsion spring garage door, sold singly. Left means the left-hand side as you stand inside the garage facing the door. The drum sits on the torsion shaft and winds the lifting cable on that side as the shaft turns, so the two drums wind the garage door cables together and the door lifts evenly. A door needs one left and one right drum. If you need the other side too, add the right cable drum.

Left or right cable drum?

Stand inside the garage and face the closed door. The drum at your left hand is the left drum; the one at your right hand is the right drum. The drums are sold by side, so check which one you need before you order. At the same end of the shaft, the left end bearing plate holds the shaft above the vertical track.

How the drum and cable work

The torsion springs turn the shaft, and the drum turns with it. The lifting cable winds into the grooves on the drum as the door goes up and unwinds as it comes down. The bottom of the cable loops onto the pin on the bottom bracket; the top end locks into the drum. Set screws in the hub hold the drum on the shaft. Use it with the lifting cables for torsion spring doors.

Drum size and door height

Cable drums come in sizes for different door heights. Locally they are usually sold as "8" for a standard-height door and "12" for a caravan-height door. Match the new drum to the one on the other side of your door, and ask Alectra Solutions to confirm the size before you order if you are not sure.

Safety: cables and springs are under high tension

The drums, lifting cables and torsion springs carry the weight of the door and are under high tension. Spring and cable work, including changing a drum, should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.

Questions people ask
How do I tell if I need the left or the right cable drum?

Stand inside the garage facing the door. The drum on your left is the left drum, the one on your right is the right drum.

Do I have to replace both drums together?

No. The drums are sold singly by side, so you can order only the side you need. Make sure it matches the size of the drum on the other side.

Which cables go on this garage door cable drum?

Lifting cables for torsion spring doors. The loop end goes on the bottom bracket pin and the other end locks into the drum.

Which drum size do I need for my door?

It depends on the door height. Locally, drums are usually sold as "8" for standard-height doors and "12" for caravan-height doors. Match the drum on your door, and ask Alectra Solutions to confirm the size before you order.

Will this drum work on a tension spring door?

No. Cable drums are for torsion spring doors, where the springs sit on a shaft above the door. Tension spring doors use pulleys and their own lifting cables.

Can I change a cable drum myself?

The drum, cables and springs are under high tension. That work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.
