This is the left end bearing plate, one of the garage door parts that hold the torsion shaft on a torsion spring door. It fits at the left end of the door, above the vertical track, and the end of the shaft turns in its bearing. Left is as seen from inside the garage facing the door, and the plate is stamped L. Sold singly: for the other end you need the right end bearing plate, and the middle of the shaft sits in the centre bearing plate.
Left or right end bearing plate?
Stand inside the garage and face the door. The plate above the left-hand vertical track is the left one, stamped L, like the one in the photo. The plate on the right-hand side is stamped R and sold as the right end bearing plate. A door uses one of each.
What the end bearing plate does
The torsion shaft is held in three places: an end bearing plate at each end and the centre bearing plate in the middle. The end plates hold the ends of the shaft above the vertical tracks so it can turn as the springs lift the door. The left cable drum sits on the same end of the shaft. You may also see this part called an end bearing bracket or a side bearing bracket.
Garage door bearing bracket safety
The end bearing plate holds the shaft that the springs and cables work against, so it is under high tension whenever the springs are wound. Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.
