A pack of 100 tek screws for steel, 12 gauge by 25mm, with a hex washer head and a self-drilling point. The point drills its own hole as you drive the screw, so you fix an electric fence bracket to a steel post, palisade upright or steel frame in one step, with no pilot hole. The 25mm is the shortest of our three lengths: it suits a bracket foot sitting flat on the steel with nothing in between. For brackets on spacers or packing, see the 38mm and 65mm.

Tek screws for steel: what 12 x 25 means

12 is the gauge, a thread of about 5.5mm. 25 is the length in millimetres. The length sets how much material the screw can fix through; how thick a steel the point can drill depends on the drill point number, which the maker does not state, so we do not quote a maximum steel thickness. All three of our tek screws are 12 gauge: the 12 x 38mm for brackets with spacers or packing and the 12 x 65mm for thick packing or layered material.

Hex washer head

The hex head takes a socket driver in a drill, and the washer face under it spreads the load on the bracket foot. There is no rubber sealing washer, so this is a fixing screw, not a roofing screw. The finish is zinc colour.

Steel or brick?

Tek screws only go into steel. For brick, concrete or block walls, use nail-in anchors 6 x 60mm for light fixings, 8 x 80mm for heavier brackets, or the Nemtek coach screw and plug set for square tube brackets.

Pairs well with

Our 6 line and 8 line straight square tube brackets, the 6 line bottom bend bracket, Nemtek 1.6mm aluminium wire, the 6 line electric fence kit and a Nemtek Merlin Stealth M18S energizer for a fence you put together part by part.

Key features
  • Drills its own hole. The self-drilling point cuts through the steel as you drive the screw. No pilot hole, no separate bit.
  • Shortest of three lengths. 25mm suits a bracket foot sitting flat on the steel. Go to 38mm or 65mm when there is a spacer or packing in between.
  • Hex washer head. Driven with a hex socket in a drill. The washer face spreads the load on the bracket foot.
  • 12 gauge thread. About 5.5mm across, the same gauge as our 38mm and 65mm tek screws.
  • For steel. Steel posts, palisade uprights and steel frames. Not for brick or wood.
  • Zinc colour finish, no sealing washer. A plain fixing screw, not a roofing screw.
  • Pack of 100. Enough screws for a full run of brackets on a steel fence.

Questions people ask
Do I need to drill a hole first?

No. The self-drilling point cuts its own hole in the steel as you drive the screw with a drill, so there is no pilot hole and no separate drill bit.

What thickness of steel will they drill?

The maker does not state the drill point number, which is what sets the steel thickness a tek screw can drill, so we cannot quote a maximum. The length of the screw does not change it: a longer screw drills the same steel, it just reaches through more material first.

Which tek screw length do I need?

The length has to pass through everything between the head and the steel, then bite into the steel. 25mm suits a bracket foot sitting flat on the post. 38mm suits a bracket on a spacer or packing. 65mm suits thick packing or layered material.

What do I drive them with?

A hex socket driver in a drill. The maker does not state the hex size, so check it against the head before you buy a socket.

Can I use them in a brick wall?

No. Tek screws are for steel. For brick, concrete or block, use nail-in anchors, or the Nemtek coach screw and plug set for square tube brackets.

Can I use them in wood?

They are metal tek screws with a metal drilling point. Timber tek screws have a different point and a coarser thread, so use the right screw for a wooden post.

Are they suitable near the coast?

The maker does not state the coating class, only that the finish is zinc colour. For a fence near the sea, ask the branch before you order.
