Of the three tek screws sizes we stock, the 12 gauge by 38mm is the middle length. It is a self-drilling hex washer head screw for steel, in a pack of 100, and the extra length over the 25mm is for electric fence brackets that sit on a spacer or packing rather than flat on the steel post or frame. The point drills its own hole as you drive it, so there is no pilot hole. For a bracket foot flat on the steel, the 12 x 25mm is enough; for thick packing or layered material, go to the 12 x 65mm.
Tek screws sizes: how to read 12 x 38
12 is the gauge, a thread of about 5.5mm. 38 is the length in millimetres. Length only decides how much material the screw can reach through before it bites into the steel. It does not decide how thick a steel the point can drill: that depends on the drill point number, which the maker does not state, so we do not quote a maximum steel thickness for any of the three lengths.
Hex washer head
The hex head takes a socket driver in a drill, and the washer face spreads the load on the bracket foot. There is no rubber sealing washer, so this is a fixing screw, not a roofing screw. The finish is zinc colour.
Steel only
Tek screws are for steel posts and frames. On a brick, concrete or block wall, use nail-in anchors or the Nemtek coach screw and plug set instead. They are metal tek screws, not timber screws.
Pairs well with
Our 8 line and 6 line straight square tube brackets, the 8 line top bend bracket, Nemtek 1.6mm aluminium wire, the 8 line electric fence kit and a Nemtek Merlin Stealth M18S energizer.
Key features
- Reaches through a spacer. 38mm gives the extra length for a bracket on packing or a spacer, and still bites into the steel behind it.
- Drills its own hole. The self-drilling point cuts through the steel as you drive the screw. No pilot hole, no separate bit.
- Hex washer head. Driven with a hex socket in a drill. The washer face spreads the load on the bracket foot.
- 12 gauge thread. About 5.5mm across, the same gauge as our 25mm and 65mm tek screws.
- For steel. Steel posts, palisade uprights and steel frames. Not for brick or wood.
- Zinc colour finish, no sealing washer. A plain fixing screw, not a roofing screw.
- Pack of 100. Enough screws for a full run of brackets on a steel fence, the same count as our 25mm and 65mm packs.

Questions people ask
All three are 12 gauge; only the length differs. 25mm suits a bracket foot flat on the steel. 38mm suits a bracket on a spacer or packing. 65mm suits thick packing or layered material. Measure what the screw has to pass through before it reaches the steel.
The maker does not state the drill point number, which is what sets the steel thickness a tek screw can drill, so we cannot quote a maximum. The length of the screw does not change it: a longer screw drills the same steel, it just reaches through more material first.
No. The self-drilling point cuts its own hole in the steel as you drive the screw with a drill, so there is no pilot hole and no separate drill bit.
A hex socket driver in a drill. The maker does not state the hex size, so check it against the head before you buy a socket.
No. Tek screws are for steel. For brick, concrete or block, use nail-in anchors, or the Nemtek coach screw and plug set for square tube brackets.
They are metal tek screws with a metal drilling point. Timber tek screws have a different point and a coarser thread, so use the right screw for a wooden post.
The maker does not state the coating class, only that the finish is zinc colour. For a fence near the sea, ask the branch before you order.
