The Hikvision DS-2FA1208-C16 is the biggest Hikvision power supply we list: a 16 channel CCTV power supply with sixteen 12V DC outputs at up to 1A each, and 96W, or 8A, in total. Like the Hikvision 8 channel, its outputs share that total, so all 16 cannot draw 1A at once: with every output in use the average is 0.5A per camera, which is plenty for HD cameras such as the HiLook 2MP range. For four cameras at full load there is the Hikvision 4 channel. It runs on 150 to 285V AC and has the same 12V, 13.5V or 15V cable length switch.

What's in the box

  • 1 x Hikvision DS-2FA1208-C16 16 channel power supply

Cameras, cable, DC plugs and the DVR are sold separately.

8A shared over 16 outputs: the load maths

Add up what your cameras draw and keep the total under 8A, with no single camera over 1A. To get a camera's amps, divide its watts by 12. Sixteen HiLook 2MP bullets at their maximum of 2.1W each come to about 2.8A, and sixteen HiLook 2MP dual light bullets at 3.2W each to about 4.3A, both well inside 8A. This is the power supply in our HiLook 16 channel CCTV kit and it suits a 16 camera system on the HiLook 16 channel eSSD DVR.

Hikvision 16 channel or the 18 channel power supply box?

Both cover a 16 camera system. Take this Hikvision unit for a compact supply with a cable length switch. Take the 18 channel 12V 20A power supply box if your cameras draw more than about 0.5A each on average, or if you want a lockable metal box: it gives 20A (240W), about 1.1A per output, with two outputs to spare.

Setting the cable length switch

Voltage drops along the power cores of a long cable, so a camera at the far end can get less than 12V. The switch has three settings: Normal (12V), Long (13.5V) and Ex-Long (15V). Leave it on Normal for short runs. On a long run your installer can step it up and measure the voltage at each camera, keeping it inside the camera's rating. HiLook rates its 2MP bullet at 12V DC ±15%, which is about 13.8V at most.

Wiring and mounting

The outputs are terminal blocks, so the power cores of each camera cable are wired straight into an output. RG59 cable with power carries video and 12V in one run, with a screw terminal DC plug on the power pair and a BNC crimp connector on the coax at the camera end. The rating label on the unit says plastic case and Hikvision gives no weatherproof rating, so mount it indoors near the DVR. The system is installed by your installer; Alectra supplies the equipment only.

Questions people ask
Can all 16 outputs give 1A at the same time?

No. The total is 8A (96W), so with all sixteen outputs in use the average is 0.5A per output. Any one output can give up to 1A as long as the total stays under 8A.

Is this the right Hikvision power supply for a 16 channel DVR?

Yes, for up to sixteen 12V cameras whose total draw is under 8A. Sixteen HiLook 2MP Turbo HD cameras come to about 2.8A to 4.3A at their maximum.

Some listings say 60W. Which is right?

The DS-2FA1208-C16 is listed at 96W with a maximum total current of 8A, which matches its model code (12V, 8A). 60W is the rating of the Hikvision 8 channel unit, the DS-2FA1205-C8.

When should I take the 18 channel power supply box instead?

When your cameras draw more than about 0.5A each on average, or when you want a lockable metal box. The 18 channel box gives 20A (240W), about 1.1A per output, with two outputs spare.

What do the Normal, Long and Ex-Long settings do?

They set the output to 12V, 13.5V or 15V to make up for voltage lost on long camera cables. Measure the voltage at the camera before leaving it on a higher setting.

Does it come with DC leads for the cameras?

No. The outputs are terminal blocks. The power cores of the camera cable are wired into the terminals and a screw terminal DC plug goes on at the camera end.

Can I mount it outside?

No. The case is plastic and Hikvision gives no weatherproof rating, so mount it indoors, for example next to the DVR.
