This white 4x4 weatherproof plug box houses a 4x4 double socket outdoors, with a lid that closes over the socket. It is the box only: the 4x4 double plug socket is sold separately. It is the 4x4 version of the 2x4 weatherproof box, which takes a single 4x2 switch or socket. For a 4x4 point indoors, the open-front 4x4 extension box is enough.
A 4x4 weatherproof plug box for a double socket
A 4x4 plate is 100 x 100mm, the size of a double plug socket. The socket fits in the box and the lid closes over it to cover the outlets when nothing is plugged in. Typical spots are the patio, the braai area, the carport or an outside wall where you plug in garden tools.
Old and new SA plugs
The 4x4 double plug socket has two large round-pin SA 3-pin outlets (SANS 164-1). New buildings since 2018 must have at least one new slim 3-pin outlet (SANS 164-2) at every socket point. For a new build, the 4x4 combination socket gives you one of each on a 4x4 plate.
What you need for the job
The box with its lid, a 4x4 socket, cable and, where the cable runs along the wall, 20mm PVC conduit. The socket, cable and conduit are sold separately. An outdoor plug point is fixed wiring, so in South Africa it must be done by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC). Alectra Solutions supplies the box only and does not install.

This box is for a 4x4 plate. For a single 4x2 switch or socket outdoors, use the 2x4 weatherproof box.
