This white 4x4 combination plug socket puts both South African plug types on one plate: one large SA 3-pin outlet (SANS 164-1) and one new slim 3-pin outlet (SANS 164-2) that also takes 2-pin Euro plugs, with two switches above them. That is the difference from our 4x4 double plug socket, which has two large round-pin outlets. New buildings since 2018 need a slim outlet like this one at every socket point.
Old and new plugs on one combination plug socket
The large outlet takes the familiar large round-pin plug, like our 16A plug top. The slim outlet takes the newer slim 3-pin plug and flat 2-pin Euro plugs, the kind found on phone chargers and many small appliances. With both on one plate, you need fewer adaptors at that point.
Why new buildings need one
Since 2018, new buildings in South Africa must have at least one SANS 164-2 outlet at every socket point. A combination socket covers that with a single 4x4 plate and still keeps a large round-pin outlet for older plugs, so nobody has to change the plugs on their appliances.
Fitting a 4x4 combination socket
The plate is 4x4, meaning 100 x 100mm, and fits a standard 4x4 wall box, so an electrician can fit it where an old 4x4 double plug was. For a surface-mounted point indoors, use the 4x4 PVC extension box. Plug points are fixed wiring: in South Africa they must be fitted by a registered electrician, who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC). Alectra Solutions supplies the socket only.
