This rewireable 16 amp plug top is the SA 3-pin plug with large round pins (SANS 164-1), rated 16A 250V. Fit it to an appliance whose old plug is cracked or burnt, or use it to make up an extension lead. The body is black with a clear pin face, so once it is wired you can look through the front and check that each core is on the right terminal before you plug in.
Which sockets does this plug top fit?
It fits the large round-pin SA 3-pin wall socket (SANS 164-1), the one with the big earth hole. It does not fit the new slim 3-pin socket (SANS 164-2), which takes thinner pins. Many newer homes have both types side by side on a combination plug socket, and this plug goes into the large outlet. Our 4x4 double plug socket has two large outlets that take it.
Wiring a 16A plug top
Open the plug and connect the three cores of the cord: green/yellow to the earth terminal at the large pin, brown to live and blue to neutral. Tighten each terminal screw firmly on the bare wire, with no loose strands sticking out. The outer sheath of the cord should run into the plug, so no coloured cores show outside it. Close it up, then look through the clear pin face to check the wiring before you use it. If you are not sure how to wire a plug, ask an electrician to do it.
No fuse in an SA plug
Unlike a British plug, an SA round-pin plug top has no fuse inside, so there is nothing in the plug to check or replace. The circuit is protected by the circuit breaker on your distribution board. If an appliance keeps tripping the breaker, have the appliance checked rather than changing the plug again.
