The No. 3 steel hinge is the side hinge for the third joint of a sectional door, between panels 3 and 4, one on each side. Of the garage door hinges on a door, it holds the roller further out than the No. 2 on the joint below, which keeps the roller in the track as the door curves overhead. The centre hinges on that joint are No. 1, and the next joint up takes the No. 4. Sold singly, two per door.

Where the No. 3 hinge goes

Count up from the bottom of the door: No. 1 at the bottom joint, No. 2 at the second joint, and the No. 3 at the third joint, where panel 3 meets panel 4. It goes at the two ends of that joint, where the roller runs in the vertical track. If your joint also has centre hinges, those are No. 1.

Through the curve of the track

As the door opens, every joint passes through the curve of the track and on overhead. Each side hinge number sets the roller a little further out than the one below, and the No. 3 holds it further out than the No. 2. That keeps the roller in the track as the door curves overhead. The photo shows the two tubes, the pivot and the roller tube, with the 3 stamped on the plate.

Garage door hinges by number

Side hinges are numbered by joint, counting up from the bottom. A standard 5-panel door uses No. 1 to No. 4 at the sides. A 6-panel door, for example a caravan-height door, adds the No. 5, and a 7-panel door adds the No. 6. The centre hinges are No. 1 on every door.

  • No. 1: bottom joint (panels 1 and 2) on each side, plus every centre hinge up the door
  • No. 2: side hinge, joint 2 to 3
  • No. 3 (this hinge): side hinge, joint 3 to 4
  • No. 4: side hinge, joint 4 to 5, the top side hinge on a standard 5-panel door
  • No. 5: side hinge, joint 5 to 6, on 6-panel doors such as caravan-height doors
  • No. 6: side hinge, joint 6 to 7, on 7-panel doors (rare on homes)

Roller, screws and fitting

The No. 3 is sold on its own. The roller goes into its roller tube: use the nylon garage door roller with steel stem, sold singly. Fix the hinge to the panels with garage door hinge screws, sold in a pack of 85. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. Springs, cables and bottom brackets are under high tension, so any work near them should be done by an experienced garage door installer.

Questions people ask
How many No. 3 garage door hinges does a door need?

Two: one at each side of the joint between panels 3 and 4. Any centre hinges on that joint are No. 1.

What is the difference between a No. 2 and a No. 3 hinge?

The No. 3 goes one joint higher, between panels 3 and 4, and holds the roller further out than the No. 2.

Can I put a No. 2 on the third joint?

No. Each side joint has its own number. The No. 3 sets the roller further out so it stays in the track as the door curves overhead.

How do I check which number my old hinge is?

Look for the number stamped on the hinge plate, or count the joints from the bottom: the side hinge on the third joint is a No. 3.

Is the roller included?

No, the hinge is sold on its own. Rollers are sold singly and hinge screws come in a pack of 85.

Do you fit garage door hinges?

No. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. Use an experienced garage door installer, especially for work near the springs and cables.
