Of all the garage door hinges on a sectional door, the No. 1 steel hinge is the one you need most. It goes on the bottom joint, between panels 1 and 2, on each side, and it is also the centre hinge at every middle position up the door. That is why a standard single door takes about 6 and a double door about 14. The side hinges on the joints above are the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, and each one holds the roller a step further out. Sold singly.

Where the No. 1 hinge goes

Count the panels from the bottom of the door. The bottom joint, where panel 1 meets panel 2, takes a No. 1 at each side. Every centre hinge, on every joint all the way up, is a No. 1 as well. Only the side hinges on the upper joints change number, because they have to hold the roller further out as you go up the door.

Garage door hinges by number

Side hinges are numbered by joint, counting up from the bottom. A standard 5-panel door uses No. 1 to No. 4 at the sides. A 6-panel door, for example a caravan-height door, adds the No. 5, and a 7-panel door adds the No. 6. The centre hinges are No. 1 on every door.

  • No. 1 (this hinge): bottom joint (panels 1 and 2) on each side, plus every centre hinge up the door
  • No. 2: side hinge, joint 2 to 3
  • No. 3: side hinge, joint 3 to 4
  • No. 4: side hinge, joint 4 to 5, the top side hinge on a standard 5-panel door
  • No. 5: side hinge, joint 5 to 6, on 6-panel doors such as caravan-height doors
  • No. 6: side hinge, joint 6 to 7, on 7-panel doors (rare on homes)

How many No. 1 hinges to order

Going by common practice in South Africa, a standard single door takes about 6 No. 1 hinges and a double door about 14, because a wider door has more centre hinges on each joint. The surest check is to count the No. 1 hinges on your own door before you order.

Rollers, screws and safety

The hinge is sold on its own. At the two side positions a roller goes into the hinge tube: use the nylon garage door roller with steel stem, sold singly. Centre hinges carry no roller. Fix the hinges with garage door hinge screws, sold in a pack of 85. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. The bottom bracket on panel 1 holds the lifting cable and carries the spring load, so never unbolt it with the springs under tension. Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer.

Questions people ask
How many No. 1 garage door hinges do I need?

Going by common SA practice, about 6 for a standard single door and about 14 for a double door. Count the No. 1 hinges on your door to be sure.

Is the No. 1 the centre hinge?

Yes. Every centre hinge on every joint is a No. 1. It is also used at the bottom joint, between panels 1 and 2, on each side.

Can I use a No. 1 on the side joints higher up?

No. The side hinges above the bottom joint are No. 2 and up. Each number holds the roller a step further out for the upper joints.

Does the hinge come with a roller or screws?

No, it is the hinge only. Rollers are sold singly and the hinge screws come in a pack of 85.

How do I tell a No. 1 from the higher numbers?

The No. 1 has a single tube on the pivot. No. 2 to No. 6 have a second tube for the roller, with the number stamped on the plate.

Do you fit the hinges?

No. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. For any work near the springs, cables or bottom brackets, use an experienced garage door installer.
