The No. 5 steel hinge is for 6-panel sectional doors, for example caravan-height doors of 2300 to 2700mm. It is the side hinge for the fifth joint, between panels 5 and 6, one on each side. A standard 5-panel door stops at the No. 4, so count your panels before you order. Among garage door hinges it holds the roller further out than the No. 4, and the centre hinges on the joint are No. 1. The rare 7-panel door uses a No. 5 too and then goes on to the No. 6. Sold singly.
Do you need a No. 5?
Count the panels on your door. A 5-panel door has four joints and uses No. 1 to No. 4 at the sides, so it has no No. 5. A 6-panel door has a fifth joint, between panels 5 and 6, and that joint takes a No. 5 at each side (so does the rare 7-panel door). Caravan-height doors of 2300 to 2700mm are a common example of a 6-panel door.
Where the No. 5 hinge goes
The No. 5 goes at the two ends of the fifth joint up from the bottom, where the roller runs in the vertical track. It holds the roller further out than the No. 4 on the joint below. Any centre hinges on that joint are No. 1. The photo shows the pivot tube and the roller tube, with the 5 stamped on the plate.
Garage door hinges by number
- No. 1: bottom joint (panels 1 and 2) on each side, plus every centre hinge up the door
- No. 2: side hinge, joint 2 to 3
- No. 3: side hinge, joint 3 to 4
- No. 4: side hinge, joint 4 to 5, the top side hinge on a standard 5-panel door
- No. 5 (this hinge): side hinge, joint 5 to 6, on 6-panel doors such as caravan-height doors
- No. 6: side hinge, joint 6 to 7, on 7-panel doors (rare on homes)
Roller, screws and fitting
The No. 5 is sold on its own. The roller goes into its roller tube: use the nylon garage door roller with steel stem, sold singly. Fix the hinge to the panels with garage door hinge screws, sold in a pack of 85. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. Springs, cables and bottom brackets are under high tension, so any work near them should be done by an experienced garage door installer.
