The No. 6 steel hinge is for 7-panel sectional doors, which are rare on homes. It is the side hinge for the sixth joint, between panels 6 and 7, one on each side. On most homes the garage door hinges stop at the No. 4 (5-panel doors) or the No. 5 (6-panel doors), so count the panels on your door before you order. The No. 6 holds the roller further out than the No. 5, and the centre hinges on the joint are No. 1. Sold singly.

Check your panel count first

Every side joint has its own hinge number. A 5-panel door uses No. 1 to No. 4 at the sides and a 6-panel door adds the No. 5. Only a door with 7 panels has a sixth joint, and only that joint takes the No. 6. If your door has fewer panels, you do not need this hinge.

Where the No. 6 hinge goes

The No. 6 goes at the two ends of the sixth joint up from the bottom, where panel 6 meets panel 7. It holds the roller further out than the No. 5 on the joint below. Any centre hinges on that joint are No. 1. The photo shows the pivot tube, the roller tube and the 6 stamped on the plate.

Garage door hinges by number

  • No. 1: bottom joint (panels 1 and 2) on each side, plus every centre hinge up the door
  • No. 2: side hinge, joint 2 to 3
  • No. 3: side hinge, joint 3 to 4
  • No. 4: side hinge, joint 4 to 5, the top side hinge on a standard 5-panel door
  • No. 5: side hinge, joint 5 to 6, on 6-panel doors such as caravan-height doors
  • No. 6 (this hinge): side hinge, joint 6 to 7, on 7-panel doors (rare on homes)

Roller, screws and fitting

The No. 6 is sold on its own. The roller goes into its roller tube: use the nylon garage door roller with steel stem, sold singly. Fix the hinge to the panels with garage door hinge screws, sold in a pack of 85. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. Springs, cables and bottom brackets are under high tension, so any work near them should be done by an experienced garage door installer.

Questions people ask
Does my garage door need a No. 6 hinge?

Only if it has 7 panels. A 5-panel door stops at the No. 4 and a 6-panel door at the No. 5.

How many No. 6 garage door hinges does a door need?

Two: one at each side of the joint between panels 6 and 7. Any centre hinges on that joint are No. 1.

What is the difference between a No. 5 and a No. 6 hinge?

The No. 6 goes one joint higher, between panels 6 and 7, and holds the roller further out than the No. 5.

Is the No. 6 meant for commercial doors?

It is simply the side hinge for the sixth joint of a 7-panel sectional door. Order it by panel count.

Is the roller included?

No, the hinge is sold on its own. Rollers are sold singly and hinge screws come in a pack of 85.
