The No. 2 steel hinge is the side hinge for the second joint of a sectional door, between panels 2 and 3, with one on each side. What sets it apart from the other garage door hinges is the roller position: its roller tube sits a little further from the door than on the No. 1, so the panels follow the lean of the track. The centre hinges on that joint stay No. 1, and the joint above takes the No. 3. Sold singly, and a door needs two.
Where the No. 2 hinge goes
Start at the bottom of the door. The bottom joint, between panels 1 and 2, takes a No. 1 at each side. The next joint up, between panels 2 and 3, takes a No. 2 at each side. Any centre hinges on that same joint are No. 1, not No. 2, so you only ever need two No. 2 hinges per door.
Why the roller sits further out
The side hinges are not all the same. Each number up the door holds the roller a little further from the door than the one below it, so the panels follow the lean of the track. On the No. 2 that step is small: just a little further out than the No. 1. You can see the difference in the photo: a pivot tube plus a separate roller tube, with the 2 stamped on the plate.
Garage door hinges by number
Side hinges are numbered by joint, counting up from the bottom. A standard 5-panel door uses No. 1 to No. 4 at the sides. A 6-panel door, for example a caravan-height door, adds the No. 5, and a 7-panel door adds the No. 6. The centre hinges are No. 1 on every door.
- No. 1: bottom joint (panels 1 and 2) on each side, plus every centre hinge up the door
- No. 2 (this hinge): side hinge, joint 2 to 3
- No. 3: side hinge, joint 3 to 4
- No. 4: side hinge, joint 4 to 5, the top side hinge on a standard 5-panel door
- No. 5: side hinge, joint 5 to 6, on 6-panel doors such as caravan-height doors
- No. 6: side hinge, joint 6 to 7, on 7-panel doors (rare on homes)
Roller, screws and fitting
The No. 2 is sold on its own. The roller goes into its roller tube: use the nylon garage door roller with steel stem, sold singly. Fix the hinge to the panels with garage door hinge screws, sold in a pack of 85. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. Springs, cables and bottom brackets are under high tension, so any work near them should be done by an experienced garage door installer.
Key features
- For joint 2 to 3. One on each side of the second joint up from the bottom, so a door takes two.
- Roller a step further out. The roller tube sits a little further from the door than on No. 1, so the panels follow the lean of the track.
- Two tubes. A pivot tube plus a separate roller tube, as in the photo.
- Number stamped on the plate. The 2 is stamped on the hinge plate, so it is easy to match to your old one.
- Centre hinges stay No. 1. Only the two side hinges on this joint are No. 2.

Questions people ask

Position and roller offset. The No. 1 goes at the bottom joint and at every centre position. The No. 2 is the side hinge one joint up and holds the roller a little further from the door.

Look for the number stamped on the hinge plate, or count the joints from the bottom of the door: the side hinge on the second joint is a No. 2.
