This white 4x4 double plug socket has two 16A SA 3-pin outlets for large round-pin plugs (SANS 164-1), and both are switched, each with its own switch. It fits a standard 4x4 wall box, so it is a straight swap for an old double plug. Where it differs from our 4x4 combination plug socket: both outlets here are the large round-pin type, while the combination socket has one large outlet and one new slim 3-pin outlet.
Double plug socket or combination socket?
New buildings since 2018 must have at least one new-style SANS 164-2 outlet at every socket point. So in a new building, each socket point needs a socket like our combination plug socket. This double socket suits an existing home where an old double plug is being replaced and both outlets need to take large round-pin plugs, such as the 16A plug top.
Fitting the 4x4 double socket
4x4 means a 100 x 100mm plate, the size that fits a standard 4x4 wall box. For a surface-mounted point indoors, the 4x4 PVC extension box takes it. Where the socket needs a lid over it, the 4x4 weatherproof plug box is made for a double socket and closes over it.
Installed by a registered electrician
Plug points are fixed wiring. In South Africa they must be fitted by a registered electrician, who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) for the work. Alectra Solutions supplies the socket only, so book your own electrician to fit it.
