This 4x4 extension box is the white PVC, open-front box for a 4x4 (100 x 100mm) plug or switch. It mounts on the wall surface, so you can add a plug point where the wall can't be chased. It has no lid and is for indoor use. For a single 4x2 plate, use the 4x2 steel extension box, and for a double socket outdoors use the 4x4 weatherproof plug box.
What a 4x4 extension box is for
Normally a 4x4 socket sits in a box built into the wall. Where that is not possible, for example on a concrete or face brick wall, or in a rented flat where you can't cut into the walls, this box sits on the wall and the plug or switch fits onto the front. The plate screws into the lugs at the top and bottom of the box.
Which 4x4 plugs fit
It takes a standard 4x4 plate, such as the 4x4 double plug socket or the 4x4 combination socket with one large SA 3-pin (SANS 164-1) and one new slim 3-pin (SANS 164-2) outlet. New buildings since 2018 must have at least one SANS 164-2 outlet at every socket point, so for new work the combination socket is the one to pick.
Indoor use, box only
The front is open and there is no lid, so the plug or switch you fit is what closes the box. That makes it an indoor box. You get the box only; the socket or switch is sold separately. Adding a plug point or switch is fixed wiring, so it must be done by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC). Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.
