This 4x2 steel extension box is galvanised, open at the front and sized for one 4x2 (100 x 50mm) switch or plug socket. It mounts on the wall surface, so you can add a switch or plug point where you can't cut into the wall, and a metal box is a common choice in garages and workshops. For a 4x4 double plug, the white 4x4 PVC extension box is the match, and for a 4x2 point outdoors use the 2x4 weatherproof box.
What fits a 4x2 steel extension box
It takes a single 4x2 plate: a light switch, a single plug socket or an isolator such as the 4x2 isolator. The plate screws onto the lugs at the top and bottom of the box. It is not big enough for a 4x4 double plug.
Where to use it
Garages, workshops and storerooms, on concrete or brick walls where chasing a box into the wall is not practical. The front is open, so the plate you fit closes it. It is not a weatherproof box, so for a point outdoors use a box with a lid.
Earthing and the CoC
A steel box is earthed as part of the wiring. Adding a switch or plug point is fixed wiring, so in South Africa it must be done by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC). Alectra Solutions supplies the box only and does not install.
