This white PVC weatherproof box is the 4x2 size: it takes one 100 x 50mm switch or socket and has a lid that closes over it with one screw. It mounts on the wall surface, so it suits an outdoor switch or plug point where there is no box in the wall. For a 4x4 double socket outdoors, use the 4x4 weatherproof plug box. For a 4x2 point indoors, the open-front 4x2 steel extension box does the job.
2x4 or 4x2: the same box
Some shops say 2x4, but electricians in South Africa mostly say 4x2. Both mean a 100 x 50mm plate, the size of a single switch, a single plug socket or an isolator. This box takes one of them, for example a 4x2 isolator. It does not take a 4x4 double socket.
Where to use a weatherproof box
Typical spots are an outside wall for a garden plug point, a switch for outside lights, or an isolator next to equipment that stands outdoors. Keep the lid closed when the switch or socket is not in use.
Box only: what else you need
You get the box and its lid. The switch or socket is sold separately, and so are the cable and any 20mm PVC conduit you run along the wall. An outdoor plug point or switch is fixed wiring, so in South Africa it must be done by a registered electrician who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC). Alectra Solutions supplies the box only and does not install.
