The centre bearing plate is one of the garage door parts every torsion spring door has, not only wide doors. It bolts to the wall above the centre of the door opening, carries the torsion shaft between the two end bearing plates, and the torsion spring cones anchor to it. That is why it is also called a torsion spring anchor plate. Sold singly, one per door. The two ends of the shaft sit in the left end bearing plate and the right end bearing plate.
What the centre bearing plate does
On a torsion spring door the springs sit on a shaft above the opening. The shaft turns in a bearing at each end of the door and in the bearing set into this plate in the middle, so the plate supports the shaft between the two end bearings. The spring cones anchor to the plate, so it also takes the spring load when the springs are wound.
Other garage door parts on the torsion shaft
- End bearing plate, left and right: hold the two ends of the shaft above the vertical tracks.
- Cable drum, left and right: wind the lifting cables as the shaft turns.
- Torsion springs: anchor to this centre bearing plate.
Safety: the plate carries the spring load
Because the torsion springs anchor to this plate, it is under high tension whenever the springs are wound. Never loosen it with the springs wound. Spring and cable work should be done by an experienced garage door installer. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only.
