This is surfix 1.5mm cable: round, white, 2 core and earth, and sold per metre. What makes it different from our flat twin and earth 1.5mm is the shape. Both are 2 core and earth fixed wiring cable, but surfix is round and twin and earth is flat. The 1.5mm size is often used for lighting circuits; for plug point circuits, see surfix cable 2.5mm. The price is per metre and the quantity box is the number of metres.

Surfix 1.5mm or flat twin and earth?

Same job, different shape. Surfix is the round cable you see coiled in the photo, and flat twin and earth is the flat one. Both are 2 core and earth cable for fixed wiring. Which shape suits the job is up to your electrician, so ask before you order.

Lighting circuits and the 1.5mm size

Surfix in 1.5mm is often used for lighting circuits. Plug point circuits often use the bigger 2.5mm surfix. These are typical uses, not a rule: the electrician chooses the cable size for each circuit, and it pays to ask before you buy so you get the right cable the first time.

Ordering surfix by the metre

The price shown is per metre. Get the total length from your electrician, or measure each run and add a little extra at the ends for the connections. Type the number of metres into the quantity box: 40 in the box means 40 metres.

Fixed wiring needs a registered electrician

In South Africa, fixed wiring must be installed by a registered electrician, who issues a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) when the work is done. Alectra Solutions supplies the cable only and does not do installations.
