This weatherproof stainless steel maglock holds a gate or door closed with 280kg of magnetic force, and it comes with a mounting bracket. The stainless steel body is made for outdoor use, which makes it a good maglock for gate entrances as well as doors that face the weather. It is fail-safe: it releases the moment its power is cut, so an exit button, keypad or intercom opens it by switching the power off, and a battery-backed power supply keeps it locked through load shedding. The power supply, exit button and keypad are sold separately.

What's in the box

  • 1 x 280kg stainless steel maglock with its armature plate
  • Mounting bracket

The power supply and backup battery, the exit button, the keypad, card reader or intercom, and the cable are not included.

How a fail-safe maglock works

The magnet is fixed to the frame or gate post and the armature plate to the gate or door. While the magnet has power, it holds the plate with up to 280kg of force; cut the power and it lets go straight away. That is what fail-safe means, and it is why nobody is locked in when the power fails. The same thing happens during load shedding, so put the lock on a power supply with a backup battery that keeps it powered when the mains goes off.

Using a maglock for a gate or a door

The stainless steel body is weatherproof, so the lock can go on an outside pedestrian gate or an exterior door. For the lock to hold, the armature plate must sit flat against the magnet when the gate or door is closed. Gates and doors differ, so let your installer check the mounting bracket against your gate or door before fitting. Alectra supplies the equipment only; the lock is installed by your installer.

What else you need

  • A power supply that matches the lock's operating voltage, with a backup battery. Ask the branch to confirm the voltage and current on the lock's label before you choose one.
  • An exit button on the inside to release the lock.
  • A keypad, card reader or intercom with a relay output on the outside, such as the SmartGuard wired keypad.
  • Cable between the lock, the power supply and the controls.

Questions people ask
Can I use this maglock for a gate?

Yes. It has a weatherproof stainless steel body made for outdoor use, so it suits a pedestrian gate as well as a door. The armature plate must sit flat against the magnet when the gate is closed.

What happens when the power goes off?

The lock is fail-safe, so it releases when the power is cut. To keep it locked during load shedding, run it from a power supply with a backup battery.

What power supply do I need?

One that matches the lock's operating voltage and has a backup battery. The power supply is not included, so ask the branch to confirm the voltage and current on the lock's label before you buy one.

How do I open the lock?

By cutting its power. An exit button on the inside and a keypad, card reader or intercom with a relay output on the outside do this, wired by your installer.

Is a bracket included?

Yes, the lock comes with a mounting bracket. Gates and doors differ, so let your installer check the bracket against yours before fitting.

Do you install it?

No. Alectra supplies the equipment only. The lock is installed by your installer.

Need it fitted? Alectra Solutions supplies product only. Ask the branch and we will point you to installers in Pretoria.
