This black rubber Janus coupler is a 3 pin inline socket. It goes on the end of a flex cord, so you plug into the cord instead of into the wall, the same as the socket end of an extension lead. Use it to make up a new extension lead, or to repair one whose socket end is damaged. It takes large round-pin SA plugs (SANS 164-1). For the other end of the cord, pair it with our 16A plug top.

What a Janus coupler is for

A Janus coupler is a socket on a cord rather than on a wall. Fit it to one end of a flex cord, put a plug top on the other end, and the cord becomes an extension lead. It also helps when the socket end of an existing lead is broken: cut the cord back to where it is sound and fit the coupler there. The body is textured black rubber, and on the face you can see the three holes, with the larger earth hole at the top and the two smaller holes below it.

Making up an extension lead

You need three things: a flex cord with live, neutral and earth, this coupler for the socket end, and a 16A plug top for the plug end. Both are the large round-pin SA type (SANS 164-1), so the lead plugs into a large round-pin wall socket at one end and takes large round-pin plugs at the other. The flex cord is not included. If you need several outlets of different types, our 7 way multi plug may suit you better.

Wiring it safely

Making up an extension lead is not fixed wiring, so you may do it yourself, but it has to be wired correctly. Connect live, neutral and earth each to the right terminal, and check all three again before you plug in. If you are not sure which core goes where, have an electrician wire it for you.

Which plugs fit this rubber Janus coupler?

It takes large round-pin SA 3-pin plugs (SANS 164-1), the same type as our 16A plug top. Slim 3-pin plugs (SANS 164-2) and two-pin plugs are a different size and do not fit it.
