The i5 infrared beams are the wired Centurion Systems gate safety beams: the transmitter and the receiver are both cabled and run on 12 to 24V AC/DC, and they work up to 40m apart. That is the longest range of the Centurion Systems beams we list. Use them on gates and garage doors. To avoid a cable on one side, see the Photon II wireless beams, or for a SMART or SMART+ motor, the fully wireless Photon SMART beams. Pricing is shown to trade account holders after login.

How the i5 beams work

The transmitter sends an infrared beam across the opening to the receiver. When a person or a vehicle breaks the beam, the receiver switches its output and the gate motor's controller responds. The i5 detects a broken beam, not movement, so it only reacts to something between the two units.

Wiring and compatibility

Both units need 12 to 24V AC or DC. The transmitter draws 21mA and the receiver 43mA at 12V. The output is a potential-free contact that can be wired N/O or N/C, rated 5A. Centurion Systems says the i5 "can be interfaced with most automation equipment", and it supports PIRAC and beam testing on controllers that have these functions.

Protecting the beams

The i5 is rated IP54 and works from -15°C to +55°C. To protect the beams from being knocked, Centurion Systems makes the i5 anti-knock shield (I5/AKSV2), which is not included and is sold separately. Alectra Solutions supplies the equipment only. Trade account holders can open the Centurion Systems i5 user guide on this page after login.

Questions people ask
Are the i5 beams wired or wireless?

Wired. The transmitter and the receiver both run on 12 to 24V AC/DC.

What range do the i5 beams have?

Up to 40m between the transmitter and the receiver.

Do the i5 beams detect movement?

No. They detect a broken beam: the receiver switches its output when something comes between the two units.

Will the i5 work with my gate motor?

Centurion Systems says the i5 "can be interfaced with most automation equipment". It runs on 12 to 24V AC/DC and gives a potential-free N/O or N/C output rated 5A.

Is the anti-knock shield included?

No. The i5 anti-knock shield (I5/AKSV2) is sold separately.

Which Centurion Systems gate safety beams should I choose?

The i5 if you can run cable to both sides and want the 40m range. The Photon II has a battery transmitter and a wired receiver, and the Photon SMART is fully wireless but works only with SMART and SMART+ controllers.
