Centurion D10 Smart vs D5 Evo Smart: Which Gate Motor Is Right for Your Gate?

Centurion D10 Smart vs D5 Evo Smart: Full Comparison

Centurion is South Africa's most trusted gate motor brand, and the D5 Evo Smart and D10 Smart are their two most popular sliding gate motors. Choosing between them often comes down to one key question: how heavy is your gate?

But there's more to the comparison than just weight capacity. Let's break it down.

Gate Weight: The Primary Decision Factor

Centurion D5 Evo Smart (500kg capacity)

Designed for standard residential sliding gates. If your gate is a single-leaf steel or aluminium panel up to approximately 8–10 metres long and weighing under 500kg, the D5 Evo Smart is the right choice. It handles the vast majority of residential gates in South Africa.

Centurion D10 Smart (1,000kg capacity)

Designed for heavy-duty residential and light commercial gates. If your gate is an older heavy steel structure, a double-leaf configuration, a wooden gate, or longer than 10 metres, the D10 Smart is the appropriate choice. Overloading a D5 Evo with a gate that's too heavy causes premature motor failure.

How to estimate your gate weight: Disconnect the gate from the motor and try pushing it manually. If two adults can move it fairly easily, it's likely under 500kg. If it's a heavy steel structure with thick tubing and very difficult to move, assume 500kg+ and spec for the D10.

Smart Features: Both Models Are Well Equipped

Both the D5 Evo Smart and D10 Smart include:

  • CONNECT.e app, open, close, and monitor your gate from your smartphone
  • Obstacle detection, automatically reverses if it hits something
  • Anti-theft alarm, alerts you if someone tries to force the gate
  • Load shedding indicator, shows battery status
  • Multiple trigger inputs, for remotes, intercoms, keypads, and access control

The D10 Smart adds capacity for external battery connections, which is important for very heavy-use gates where the internal 7Ah battery drains faster.

Battery Backup During Load Shedding

D5 Evo Smart: The internal 7Ah battery typically provides 50–80 complete gate cycles. For most households, this is 2–4 days of normal use without mains power. You can also add an external 18Ah battery for extended backup.

D10 Smart: Because it's driving a heavier gate with a more powerful motor, the D10 uses more power per cycle. Expect 30–50 cycles from the internal battery. An external 18Ah battery is strongly recommended for households in areas with heavy load shedding.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the D5 Evo Smart if:

  • Your gate weighs under 500kg
  • You have a standard residential sliding gate up to ~10m long
  • You want the best-selling, most-supported motor in South Africa
  • Budget is a consideration

Choose the D10 Smart if:

  • Your gate weighs between 500kg and 1,000kg
  • You have a longer or heavier steel gate
  • You have a commercial or high-traffic property
  • You want maximum peace of mind for a demanding application

When in doubt, choose the D10. A slightly overpowered motor runs easier, runs cooler, and lasts longer than an underpowered one working at its limit.
